Miramont & Aquaponics

Miramont Aquaponics is a South African based aquaponics farm. Situated in Cape Town, the farm boasts a magnificent view of the mountains and farmlands. It serves as inspiration to pursue farming by incorporating experimental farming technologies.

Although a few aquaponic farms exist in South Africa, aquaponics is still very much new and unheard of. Therefor we strive to educate and inform the public of alternative farming methods that is not only better for the environment, but healthier to consume as well. We also encourage people to start their own backyard aquaponic vegetable gardens.

Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture and hydroponics. This allows you to farm fish and grow vegetables in an enclosed system that is semi-reliant on each other. This semi-reliant system is quite simple – fish waste and ammonia in the water provide nutrients to the growing vegetables and in turn, the vegetables provide clean filtered water to the fish. There are several different systems that you can incorporate into aquaponics, for example – raft beds, media beds, vertical beds etc., but it all depends on your preference, space, purpose and resources.

Although aquaponics is the answer to growing protein and vegetables in one system, at Miramont Aquaponics we do not farm fish for consumption. A vegetarian ethos best suit us as we love and care for our fish. We farm different breeds of Koi for decorative purposes only.

We welcome you to visit the farm and see our operation as we have an open farm policy. We also encourage you to comment, ask questions and give feedback. We would love to help you and we always appreciate suggestions or new ideas that we can test or incorporate into our systems.
